Summary
The action of the story took place in Liza’s house, where she and her aunt, Tita Loleng, were preparing sinigang, her father’s favorite dish. The plot revolves around Liza’s dealings with her father’s extramarital romance with Sylvia, which resulted in the birth of a boy named Lem. Unfortunately, Lem died and his death lead to Liza’s story with her aunt.
Morals
In every story we read, we encounter moral lessons, and there are a lot of life lessons slash morals for us to takeaway in this story, ‘sinigang’ depicts what most filipino household goes through. and this is the most important lesson i would take from this story.
Mentality
Family is an integral part of kids’ lives. It shapes and nurtures them into adults. Having a healthy communication is important in every family. This openness would lead them in opening their hearts, emotions and thoughts leading to have a healthy relationship in one another. By developing the communication in the family, mentality comes second. In the short story, it shows that eventhough Liza forgives his father with the mistake he had done, the pain is still inside her heart and will be there as long as she lives. Improving mentality of each member would be great in each household. There are a lot of values in each family that we should be mindful of such as acceptance, compassion, cooperation, courage, equality, fairness, generosity, gratitude, honesty, integrity, kindness, perseverance, politeness, respect, responsibility, self-control, tolerance and trustworthy. In developing mentality, its like you are hitting two birds in one stone because having this would lead into a strong and healthy family. Having healthy mentality also gives you the capacity to understand deeper in things. The values I have mentioned earlier is necessary in building a healthy mentality so don’t miss it when teaching something in your child. It shows that in the story, even though there is the forgiveness and acceptance, it doesn’t erase the void in one’s heart, but, the feeling of moving forward is there. Every challenges in a family would’ve been easier with a great and powerful mentality.
Impact
As a 21st century learner, this story made me realize many things. It left a huge impact to me that it made me think twice about the words choice and option. There will be things that will be considered a choice and other thing as an option. Choice is the ability to select anything or an option from a set of options; options are spread out in front of us for us to choose from; options are things, and choices are our decisions; options are fixed, while choices aren’t. This cheating incident in the family of Liza is common thing here in the Philippines which is very alarming. We should always think about our responsibilities as well as the outcomes in every decision we do as it affects not only you but also the people around you.
